Name of the book: Circus Folk & Village Freaks
Author: Aparna Upadhyaya Sanyal
My Rating: 4.5/5
Circus Folk & Village Freaks is a collection of 18 twisted tales in the form of poetry. These aren’t your usual romantic couplets but instead some beautifully woven words that bring out the absurd details of human life. All the poems in the book are very well connected and you will most certainly find elements of them in each other. Aparna has done a commendable job at poetry and unlike most poets today, she had refrained from micro-poetry.
Reading these poems about people from the circus definitely took me back to my school days where poems were a huge part of our curriculum. The poetry is simple yet elegant. The author’s work is reflected through her words as she had done a great job at writing something unique. I could complete the book in one sitting and I thoroughly enjoyed the illustrations that gave colour to them words. My favourite poems were Miss Rita, The Mustachioed Lady and Miss Luxmi, The Daredevil Dart Thrower. The cover is also beautiful and indeed reminded of how amazing poetry can be.
Things I liked:
The poems showcased absurdity and flaws which is important
It brought together a bunch of freaks that had lovely back stories
None of the poems seemed forced
The cover and the illustrations inside the book
Connection between all the tales
Things I didn’t like:
Nothing! I thoroughly enjoyed the book since it was smooth flowing. Although I do wish a few poems were a little shorter.
Would I recommend?
Yes! This hardcover will entertain you for even after you’ve completed reading it.
